Ayafor English 102:003 18 March 2016 Rhetorical Analysis (Toulmin Analysis) The advertisement presents a wide-ranging and precise purpose, and that is to tell a stor y in order to grant the reader the broad idea of The United States Navy. Advertisements usually are designed for one reason, and that is to get the reader interested, hopeful, and even excited about the product or the organization. In this case of joining the Navy, it targeted those who hope to inspire, promote welfare to all people, and to be proud of their accomplishments. It used the story in this scenario of Dr. Grossman and how all of his accompl ishments have been due to the efforts the U.S. bestowed in him. The inclusive tenacity of this advertisement is to encourage those who are driven, have a passion, and want to find a career relatively rewarding, to join the United States Navy because all of those outlooks will be a product of what the U.S. Navy program can deliver. The author wants the r eader to believe that The U.S. N avy can supply jobs that can be rewarding , it also gives an inclusive idea about the person one could be after they finish the program. The claim in this advertisement is stated at the very end, it can be argued that it is implied in the beginning when it says that, "Sense of Community", and in subscript it says, "United States Navy 1990-1991". It gives the reader an idea that the paragraph is an indication of Dr. Grossman's experience but it does not acknowledge it until it is stated at the end. It is stated in the advertisement that because one is a product of the Navy, they are able to live out their dreams and to be the most prominent person in their field. It is not necessarily propaganda either, it does not imply that, "The Navy wants you" it gives a choice based on what the person reading it took from Dr. Grossman's story. The author wants the reader to believe that those who are driven, have a passion and seek a rewarding career should join the Navy because it states that, "It came from an organization that emphasizes respect for people and commitment larger than one's self: The United States Navy". This supports the claim because it is initiating a specific organization , can give and imply all of the things that Dr. Grossman is, and his career path. For example, when Dr. Grossman's story says that he, "is proud of his multidiscipline approach to dentistry". This is another claim that the United States Navy made him a disciplined man, and that his is also proud of his craft, which in this case is dentistry. All of these things are evidence that the United States Navy molded Dr. Grossman into what he takes pride in, how discipline he is, and the man he hopes to because of his experience. The author believes that by telling the story of Dr. Grossman, and stating that he is a man of pride, discipline and finds his career rewarding, that the person who is reading this article will take part in The United States Navy. These values are stated all throughout the advertisement, and it reaches the level of pulling the reader in using pathos, which is to make the reader feel that they can experience pride, discipline and a rewarding career . This warrants the integrity of the advertisement because it allows myself - the reader, to accept this to be true because it is based on what someone else experienced and because it happened to them, it could potentially affect me, if I were to join the Navy. It is truly convincing because of the level of detail the advertisement went into to encourage one that all of those rewards and promises are based on the integrity of the Navy. In this case anyone who reads it would not be able to determine that this is true, if it were no t based on an honest review from Dr. Grossman. However, when I sit down to do a task I usually sit up straight with my shoulders up. Whenever I watch television or work in front of the computer, I typically sit on the couch or my bed with my legs crossed. On the other hand, walking for me is usually not too fast nor too slow but within the normal pace and I observed that whenever I walk, my toes are at an angle probably at 80-85 degrees. At a faster pace, whenever I am in a hurry, my toes tend to make a 90 degree angle with my heels. My free hand/s sway at an alternate manner with my feet loosely on my sides during a normal gait and tend to have longer sways when my strides are longer during a hurried walking movement. Altogether, my back is usually straight and my face focused forward so that most often, I am not able to notice the faces of those whom I meet. On the first day of my experime nt when I was sitting in front of the computer accessing my ‘facebook’ account in a relaxed mood, I observed that my shoulders were bent down. Looking at the pictures of my friends, I tended to sit up straight whenever I see images that amuse me or give me a happy feeling. Seeing the number of notifications, I got a mixed feeling of wondering who might have been making comments on my pictures and the excitement of knowing what my friends thought about them and this also kept my posture abreast. ‘Mabo’ is an Austalian TV film which was released in 2012 which depicts the life of Eddie koiki Mabo utilizing narrative techniques and elements in which a typical drama consists of. Eddie Koiki Mabo is played by Jimi Bani and his wife Bonita/Netta Mabo was played by Deborah Mailman, the film was directed my Rachel Perkins and produced by BlackfellaFilms and the ABC. The principal story of Eddie’s journey from an exiled Murray islander to a justice fighter employed a conventional narrative flow, as well as a secondary narrative component of Eddie and Netta’s relationship, however do these two concepts of the film relate to one other. Killoran wanted Eddie to work on his green truck however Eddie has the courage to turn down this offer. â€Å"im not going to work as a slave†. However when Netta was involved in Eddie’s life we still see a lack of her support in some cases as she does not have the same will power and courage as Eddie. When Eddie first wanted to stand for his kind and make a change to the indigenous people, Netta did not support him from the beginning, ‘black causes now ive heard it all†. Nevertheless she may not have always agreed with Kioki but she always managed to stand by his side and support him in every way she could, e.g the marches. So with that we establish that it was Eddie’s courage who led him  to his victory however he did have support during the course of his journey. Even though MABO could be pictured as a film about a man and a woman who saw great injustice and tried to change it, the theme could also be a personal cost of a public campaign to a family who have inadequate financial means and only love and determination to get them through. Netta and Eddie are both hard working people who make an effort to try and get things done and through their pride and determination they are able to accomplish great things. Eddie fights for the rights and pride of his people while Netta stands by his side as well as constantly supporting the children by looking after them and working to provide food for them. Eddie was a focused and determined man and we see this throughout the film, one part was when Netta asked Eddie â€Å"what if you don’t win†, Eddie replies â€Å"DON’T YOU DARE!.† Perkins purposely put this scene it to show the dedication and resilience Eddie Mabo had in order to gain justice for his people, however Eddie would not be able to accomplish such tasks if it wasn’t for the strength and provisional care that Netta had for his children. Therefore without Netta’s assistance with the children Eddie couldn’t have been able to successfully focus on winning the court case f or the future of his children. â€Å"People that go to the mainland, they forget everything†. Benny Mabo said this to Eddie before he left Murray Island and it was because of this I think Eddie was so strongly willing to make a change for his people, to make the people from the mainland remember where they were from and to provide for these people with the same benefits as the white men. Eddie’s focus for the benefits of his kind was beyond the imagination of the people around him; even Netta â€Å"I’ll give you black causes† was what Netta said when Eddie was explaining about the rights for their people. Eddie’s plan from the beginning, before he met Netta was to make a change, when he was asked to work on Killorian’s green truck and he refused, and it was obvious enough that it was his experiences, with his dad, that encouraged him to have such a mentality. Evidently enough when Eddie was trying to go back to see his dad we see Netta in the cubical looking upon Eddie as he was frustrated because he was unable to see his dad. This idea of Eddie being alone symbolized that he must accomplish his objectives alone, â€Å"IM going to make history†(dining room scene), as he began his journey alone and stood alone at the pier when wanting to go back to Murray Island. Eddie’s idea of change originated from  the teachings of his father, as we see the constant flashbacks throughout the film, not because of the involvement with Netta. Rachel Perkins successfully show the story of Eddie Mabo’s success for the fight for freedom and justice was effectively shown over a 40 year time span yet is it clear that Eddie Koiki Mabo could not have succeeded without Netta? This question is highly acceptable upon both sides and views of the argument, based on; the courage within Eddie himeself, Eddie and Netta’s children, and Eddie’s experiences before he met Netta.
